Consider a Gift of Land

Land trusts are recognized around the world for their tools to facilitate land conservation. If you are interested in exploring these options, please contact us to initiate the conversation.

The MWLT considers each property proposed for protection under a set of standard criteria. Each option for protection will be presented and the benefits of each described. Landowners will be urged to discuss these options with independent professional advisors.

Conservation tools may include one or more of the following:

Potential Benefits of Conserving

Through the Land Trust

  1. Gaining significant income tax benefits.

  2. Having costs such as surveying and severing land covered or reduced.

  3. In the case of certified ecologically sensitive land, avoiding or reducing capital gains taxes incurred by the sale or transfer of land.

  4. Peace of mind of knowing that your piece of paradise will be permanently protected while also having the flexibility of either registering a conservation easement on title to remain owner of the land and be able to sell or pass the land on to heirs, or transferring title (in the case of donation, purchase, or partial donation/partial purchase) and providing input into the management of the land upon transfer that will last forever.

In addition to working with individuals, the MWLT may also work with corporations to protect land.  In some scenarios corporations can realize tax advantages through donation of land.

All tax and property scenarios are different.  Please contact us to discuss the permanent protection of your piece of paradise.

American Donations

US tax benefits available for gifts to support the MWLT

Americans can make a contribution to underwrite conservation in the Magnetawan area that is tax deductible against US income. The MWLT is a qualified partner of American Friends of Canadian Conservation (formerly American Friends of Canadian Land Trusts), a US 501(c)(3) charity with the mission of protecting Canada’s natural heritage. American Friends facilitates gifts of money (including securities) and land to its Canadian partners, operating much like a donor-advised fund. All donations above $20 includes membership and will be mentioned in our spring newsletter, unless you wish to remain anonymous.

Donating by Credit Card

US taxpayers can help the MWLT achieve its mission through donations of cash or securities to American Friends. You can give online, using a credit card, here on the American Friends of Canadian Conservation website

MWLT’s American supporters who don’t need a US tax deduction, or who want to donate less than $200USD, can contribute directly to MWLT by clicking here.

Donating by Check

If you prefer to donate by check, download and complete the Grant Recommendation Form here and send it with your gift to:

American Friends of Canadian Conservation
336 36th St, #717
Bellingham, WA 98225

American donors with Canadian source income to report on their U.S. tax returns (those who file Canadian Tax Returns) can make donations directly to the MWLT here and seek a charitable deduction up to 50% of the their Canadian source income on their U.S. tax returns. American donors with Canadian source income making donations directly to MWLT should consult with their tax advisers on when and how to seek the deduction.  For more information, a summary of the Conservation Lands Process can be found here.

Donating Securities

American Friends can also accept tax deductible gifts of securities, allowing you to avoid incurring capital gains taxes associated with selling appreciated stocks, bonds, or mutual fund shares. Contact Sandra Tassel, 360-515-7171 or info@conservecanada.org for instructions on donating securities.

For more information visit the American Friends of Canadian Conservation website.

American Friends retains a small portion of each contribution to administer its grant program as outlined in the recommendation form. When you complete the grant recommendation form, please consider designating an additional amount to help American Friends increase its capacity to preserve Canada’s land and water resources.
